Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is strategic tax planning?
Strategic tax planning looks forward. Instead of simply reporting what already happened, it evaluates decisions before they are made to identify legal ways to reduce current and future tax liabilities while considering the effect on cash flow, retirement, investments, business interests, and long-term goals.
-
How is tax planning different from tax preparation?
Tax preparation documents the past and calculates the tax due based on decisions that have already been made. Tax planning focuses on what can still be changed and what decisions should be considered before the tax consequences occur.
3. Why is coordination so important?
Most financial plans are built one decision at a time. A tax return here. An investment account there. An insurance policy somewhere else. An estate plan that may not connect to the business or retirement plan. Over time, the client’s financial life can start to look like a junk drawer of disconnected products and strategies. Coordination helps make sure the pieces are working together.
4. How do I know if I am paying too much in taxes?
The tax return alone does not always answer that question. We review your income, business structure, investments, retirement accounts, real estate, deductions, elections, and other planning opportunities to determine whether strategies may exist that have not been considered.

Who is a good fit for strategic tax planning?
Our work is generally most valuable for business owners, high-income professionals, real estate investors, executives, and individuals approaching retirement who have enough financial complexity for proactive planning to make a meaningful difference.
Retirement planning is especially important because many people have spent decades being told to defer taxes, maximize tax-deferred accounts, and worry about the tax consequences later. As retirement approaches, that can create a very different problem—large taxable account balances, required minimum distributions, more of their Social Security benefits becoming taxable, higher Medicare premiums, and less flexibility over when and how taxes are paid.
Strategic planning before retirement can help identify opportunities to reduce future tax exposure, manage taxable income, and create a more tax-efficient retirement-income strategy.
-
What types of tax strategies do you evaluate?
Depending on the client, planning may include entity and trust structures, retirement plans, Roth conversions, real estate strategies, charitable planning, business succession, income timing, deductions, asset location, estate considerations, and other opportunities available under the tax code.
We also evaluate a broader range of advanced strategies when appropriate, including alternative assets, heavy-equipment leasing, specialized retirement structures, and other tax-focused planning techniques that may not be part of a traditional tax-preparation conversation.
-
Will every tax strategy save me money?
Every strategy we present is designed to create a tax benefit, but that does not automatically mean every strategy is a good fit for you.
We focus on the strategies we believe are most appropriate for your situation, then evaluate the potential tax savings alongside the cost, liquidity requirements, risks, long-term consequences, and impact on the rest of your financial plan before deciding whether it makes sense to move forward.
8. Can a firm bring you a case without giving client names?
Yes. An anonymous case review is often the easiest way to start. A firm can bring us a client situation without names or identifying information. We review the facts and help identify possible planning opportunities, risks, questions to ask, and next steps.
10. What makes Legacy Advisors different?
We are not trying to sell a random product or force every client into the same strategy. Our philosophy is that better planning starts with better coordination and better questions. We look at how the client’s tax, retirement, estate, insurance, business, liquidity, and wealth-transfer decisions connect. When deeper expertise is needed, we help bring the right specialists to the table.
